How to use data binning in LMA

Data binning background

Data binning is a tool in LMA that combines adjacent data points in order to facilitate area and distance based analysis of cellular networks. This smooths out testing artifacts, such as a device stopping at a red light or doubling back on itself during a drive test. Below, you can see that data binning has taken the messy drive data and turned it into a consistent grid, which can these be used for accurate statistical analysis.

How to bin data

First, open up a map of the parameter you want to use as your reference, then left click, select Trace>Binning Option.

That will open up the Data Binning Setup pop up, where you will select the binning method, radius, calculation option, and display type for the data binning. When you are done, click Apply.

Now that the binning is set up, just left click and select Trace>Data Binning, and you should see the map display the binned data.

Analysis on binned data

To do more complex analysis on the binned data, we can create a new log file with the binned data. Simply left click and select Trace>Create Binned Measures, and LMA will create a new log file with the data sorted into bins.

In the new file, every parameter has had data binning applied to it. For instance, if you binned the data using the RSRP data, the RSRQ and SINR data (along with dozens of others) will also be sorted into those bins.
